ESA Living Planet 2015 fellowship to Matthias Forkel and Wouter Dorigo: "Soil moisture controls on fire emissions"
ESA has awarded a Living Planet postdoc fellowship 2015 to Matthias Forkel. The study called "CCI data for assessing SOil moisture controls on FIre Emissions (CCI4SOFIE)" was submitted by Wouter Dorigo and Matthias Forkel and will assess the role of soil moisture in controlling fire spread and emissions (e.g. CO2, NOx) into the atmosphere.
The study will exploit the synergy between various Earth observation datasets of soil moisture (e.g, ESA CCI soil moisture), fire, land cover, greenhouse gases, aerosols, and emissions with the final goal to improve the fire emission model "SPITFIRE" coupled to the Global Ecosystem Model LPJml.
Matthias Forkel will start his fellowship at TU Wien in February 2016 under the umbrella of EOWAVE, while closely cooperating with the VU University Amsterdam (Prof. Guido van der Werf), the Postdam Institute of Climate Impact Research (PIK; Dr. Kirsten Thionicke), and Transmissivity (Dr. Richard de Jeu).
